A Shining Light Across America
Info site on FacebookFor the first time in a century, we are coming together for a single, nationwide celebration with “A Shining Light Across America.” Scout, leaders, volunteers, alumni, and families will have the opportunity to celebrate Scouting, and reflect on what it has meant to millions.
On Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 8 p.m. ET, we’re broadcasting the Centennial Celebration show by satellite from the national Scout jamboree to local celebrations across the country, and streaming it live over the Internet via http://www.ustream.tv/shininglight and http://bit.ly/9MfvHP. Celebrations will include events both large and small—from taking over New York’s Times Square to hosting a small pizza party – and viewers tuning in via Webcast will be able to comment and interact with fellow webcast participants while watching.

Fun Jamboree Facts
The 45,000 attendees include 37,000 Scouts from all 50 states, 8,000 Scout leaders, and staff. A whopping 275,000 visitors also join the celebration over the course of the 10 days, curious to partake in the festivities!This 76,000-acre facility has hosted the national Scout jamboree since 1981. The Boy Scouts of America uses approximately 3,000 acres of this land to support a city of more than 50,000 inhabitants.
The 21 camping areas house approximately 1,200 to 2,000 Scouts and 200 staffers each. Campers bring their own tents, cooking equipment, and supplies.
Food service equivalent to one semi truck for every two camps is delivered daily to the commissary—that’s 42 semi truck loads of food daily, feeding all these eager and ambitious young people.
